It’s that time of year again, SPRING CLEANING! I don’t know about you, but when I hear spring cleaning I immediately start to feel overwhelmed. Where do I start? What do I need to clean that I’m don’t always clean? If you are like me then this probably just means, we don’t know where to start!! Lucky for you, I have come up with some ways to help us combat that feeling of overwhelmingness.
What are some of the benefits of spring cleaning your home?
Deep cleaning is known to help boost your productivity
The Journal of Neuroscience states that too much of a mess can significantly clutter up your brain and its ability to process. So, controlling the mess around us help our brain have less chaos and will help your brain stay focused.
You can Breathe with ease
Deep cleaning can also help our lungs. This is especially important if you or someone in your household have are prone to allergies or asthma. The American Lung Association says that hundreds of thousands of dust mites are living in our bedding, mattresses and in our upholstered furniture, carpet and curtains.
While those dust mites live rent free in our space, they can affect or trigger allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues. A good deep cleaning/dusting can overall help you breathe better and prevent respiratory issues. This will support an overall healthy immune system.
Trying to get in that work out for the day?
Well, you’re in luck! Deep cleaning or cleaning in general is considered moderate exercise, and moderate to me sounds like it is equal to a half marathon! The American Heart Association counts housework as exercise! So I did get me steps in today!?!? 🤔😏How does it count, you ask? While you are vacuuming you are burning as many calories as you would on a leisurely walk.
Want another way to improve your sleep?
That’s right cleaning can not only help get your workout in, but it can help you sleep just that much better.

The National Sleep Foundation has found that people who wash their sheets and bedding on a weekly basis, report to have found that you will get a 19% better nights rest. I don’t know about you but I can use every ounce of extra sleep!
It can also help improve your health
Yes, that’s right, your health. A study done by the British Journal of sport medicine says cleaning for just 20 minutes can reduce stress and anxiety levels as much as 20%. Now if I could just reduce the stress my partner causes 😲
Now that we know the “WHY we can start to focus on the “HOW”. This will help us to stay focused, and to help clean the household items that may have been neglected, or just skipped our minds to ever clean.
1).Making a Schedule
Pull out the notebooks and start going from room to room, and ask yourself, what areas need the most work? Or what are things I purposely skip because I just really don’t want to do it? It doesn’t matter where you start, but starting with a plan will help you focus and keep on track to getting what needs to be done, done!
2). Top to Bottom
When cleaning you want to work from top to bottom. That means starting with the ceiling. Why? When you start dusting you are having all the debris fall downward. So doing the ceiling first will help you not have to clean your space twice. Ahhh efficiency!

3). Don’t Forget The Windows And Walls Need Our Love Too

You’re always vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping the floors. But what about your windows and walls?
We must remember that dust doesn’t just land on the floor. It loves to settle on all types of different surfaces. All you need is a damp towel to wipe down the surfaces of your walls and windows. Oh, and don’t forget the blinds (**just remember to start at the top of work your way down!)
4). What About The Air We Breathe
One of the most common household items we overlook is our furnace and HVAC filters. Did you know that the Air conditioner ducts build up dust in the winter? That seems insane! So replacing the filters will help more of those irritating particles that might be getting through because of your dirty, dirty filter. In changing these filters, it will help those who suffer from allergies and asthma.
5). But what should I clean
There is so much we can clean. The list is never ending. But for right now, let’s just focus on small household chores that may get overlooked. Things like,
- pty

- all your drawers and clean up all the dust that gets inside.
- Declutter closets- Examples: towel/linen, craft closet and pantry. If it’s a closet, DECLUTTER IT!!
- Clean behind your fridge and oven. Deep clean that oven. Those turkey juices are too old to be lingering around!
- Couches and chairs. Wash those couch cushions, and finally vacuum under the couch cushions. Sometimes there are even hidden treasures 🪙
- Clean those base boards. They catch way more dust than we want them to.
- While doing all this cleaning it is a good time to check those batteries on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Why wait till we have that annoying beep.
- This is a good time to go through and disinfect everything. Disinfect items that tend to get neglected. Things like, keyboards and your mouse. Doorknobs, tv remotes and light switches. Surfaces that get used EVERYDAY ALL DAY, but we tend to neglect!
- Wash those windows and screens.
- The Bathroom: Clean out those toothbrush holders, replace your shower curtain liner and wash those floor mats. Don’t forget to wash those bathroom trashcans. If you have decorative towels give them a wash, help get the dust off !
- Don’t forget the washer and dryer. Clean out those dryer vents and deep clean your washer. Some have a self-clean button, but they can’t clean everything. Get in those nooks and crannies. If you think it needs to be cleaned, then it probably does.
Overall, your Spring Cleaning or Deep clean, is meant to help you get your house back to where you want it to be after a busy holiday season and getting ready for some fun in the sun season. With that happy cleaning!
